UNICORN IN CAPTIVITY (from the Unicorn Tapestries)
Inspired by the iconic series Unicorn Tapestries on display at The Met Cloisters. Seen in these tapestries are vivid depictions of ripe pomegranates, lush forest berries, & fragrant flowers. We created this jam to bring to life these masterpieces of medieval art.
The Unicorn in Captivity (from the Unicorn Tapestries), 1495–1505. Gift of John D. Rockefeller Jr., 1937
STRAWBERRIES
Universally beloved this fruit is fragrant, sweet, slightly tart & refreshing; beckoning our childhood. The garden strawberry originated in France as a cross between wild berries of North America & Chile. Packed with a multitude of vitamins & nutrients it’s not hard to understand its popularity.
POMEGRANATE
The pomegranate has been cultivated since ancient times; originating in the region extending from modern-day Iran to India. The pomegranate tree is a fertility symbol in medieval legend and an important feature in the hunt of that magical unicorn. It was said the only way to tame the mythical beast was to chain it to a pomegranate tree.
ROSE PETALS
Roses, prized for their beauty and fragrance, have long been a symbol of luxury. As well as their culinary and medicinal value roses have been predominant in the medieval pleasure gardens, kitchens and physic gardens. Rose petals are rich in vitamin A, C and E containing anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties making it a long standing health and wellness favorite.
PECTIN
We use pure pectin extracted from the peel of lemon, lime, & oranges. Unlike “normal” pectin our pectin reacts to nutrients in fruit - not sugar. Because there’s no chemical additives or stabilizers our preserves have a naturally soft set.
